Heightened security in Sri Lankan capital Colombo during Vesak Week

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Police Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara said 3,000 police personnel will be deployed on Vesak Day for the security of the people and traffic control in the Colombo City.

He said the police have arranged a special operation on Vesak Day to ensure the security of the people and to control the traffic.

The police spokesman said five Vesak zones including 11 pandals will be held in Colombo and 1900 police personnel will be deployed around the Vesak zones while 1100 will be deployed as traffic police officers.

In addition, Panadura-Walana Central Anti-Corruption Unit will also be in action to raid drug peddlers SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The Spokesman noted that 23 fatalities were reported during the 2016 Vesak season and 40 deaths in 2017 due to traffic accidents.

He said the most of the traffic accidents during festive seasons were caused due to the negligence of the motorcycle riders and asked the motorcycle riders to be more mindful of their driving to minimize the traffic accidents.
