National Colleges of Education to be restructured to enroll more student teachers

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The National Colleges of Education, popularly known as ‘Vidya Peeta’ will be restructured, according to the Ministry of Education.

Under the restructuring process, the number of students enrolled will be increased and hostel facilities for the students will be expanded.

Due to limited space, only a small group of students for teacher training can be accommodated in these colleges at present and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has instructed to increase the yearly enrollments. Commissioner of Teacher Education at the Education Ministry, K.M.H. Bandara said a committee has been appointed to oversee the process, and foreign expert advice will also be sought, state run radio reported.

It has been observed that there is a high demand for teachers qualifying from these national education colleges. Therefore, the Commissioner points out that it is a timely move to restructure teacher training in the country.
