Petition filed against Presidential election rejected

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – petition filed in the Supreme Court against the gazette notification on the 2019 Presidential election has been rejected.

Former Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva had filed the petition and named the Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya, members of the commission and the Attorney General as its respondents.

The petitioner pointed out that the term of the incumbent President, Maithripala Sirisena, is for six years beginning January 8, 2015.

However, the petitioner noted that the Election Commission has issued a gazette notification to conduct a Presidential election after five years of the current President’s term.

A court order has been sought to prevent the election from being held this year.
