World Bank project office for mitigation of climate change in Sri Lanka opened

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Minister of Agriculture, Rural Economic Affairs, Irrigation and Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development P. Harrison opened the World Bank Project Office for Mitigation of Climate Change in Sri Lanka at the Department of Irrigation premises.

The project office using modern technology will co-ordinate all agencies operating in the event of natural disasters for collection of data on climate change in Sri Lanka, early detection of disasters, and raising public awareness to minimize the damages.

The project office will have a senior officer representing each of the relevant agencies which include the Irrigation Department, Meteorology Department, National Building Research Organization (NBRO), Agriculture Department, Disaster Management Center, Fisheries Ministry and NARA.

Memorandums of Understanding agreed by the Irrigation Department, Ministry of Disaster Management and Ministry of Irrigation with the World Bank were also exchanged.

State Minister of Health Faizal Cassim, Director of RIMES R. Subbaiah, Irrigation Director General Mohan Raja, Senior Additional Secretary to the President Sisira Kumara, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation Alwis and Additional Director General of the Department of Meteorology AK Karunanayake. Disaster Management Center Director Brigadier Athula Ariyaratne and other officials were present at the occasion.
