UNP expels MP Wasantha Senanayake from the party

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The United National Party (UNP) states that it has decided to suspend the party membership of State Minister of Foreign Affairs Wasantha Senanayake with immediate effect.

The Secretary General of the United National Party, Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has informed the parliamentarian that he will also be removed from the post of State Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Kariyawasam said the party leaders of the New Democratic Front alliance had taken the decision to expel Dissanayake.

According to internal sources of the UNP, this decision has been taken due to his behavior of switching parties and violating party discipline over the years.

During the 51-day coup last year Wasantha Senanayake switched sides seven times ultimately coming back to the UNP.

Senanayake recently in a letter informed the UNP-led New Democratic Front presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa that he will not support the NDF election campaign.

Following the letter, there was speculation that Senanayake was trying to cross over again and support the SLPP candidate at the upcoming presidential election.
