(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Attention has been drawn to the relocation of prisoners sentenced to death or convicted of serious crimes to an island in Batticaloa, stated Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Minister of Justice, Human Rights, and Law Reforms mentioned this at a press conference held yesterday (10).
The aforementioned island reserved for leprosy patients in Batticaloa currently accommodates only two patients; and they too are in the process of recovery, he said.
Thereby it has been brought to attention that the Prisons Department may overtake the island from health sectors and to relocate prisoners convicted of serious crimes or sentenced to death to the island, said the Minister.
However, this process may take some time, the minister further said.
