Minor tremor reported in Walapane area

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) states that a small earthquake measuring less than 2 on the Richter scale was reported from Walapane and Badulla areas this morning.

A spokesman for the Tsunami Early Warning Center at the Bureau said the quake struck at around 3.29 this morning.

The magnitude of the quake was 1.8 on the Richter scale and it lasted for 06 seconds, said Anura Walpola, Chairman of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.

The spokesman further stated that the quake was recorded on the Mahakanadarawa, Pallekele and Hakmana seismometers.

Meanwhile, the village of Viyaluwa Akiriya was also affected by the quake, residents said.

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau stated that further investigations are being carried out into the incident.
