Court issues summons to 25 defendants of the Easter Sunday attacks

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Colombo High Court Trial-at-Bar has issued summons to 25 defendants of the case pertaining to the Easter Sunday bombings to appear before the court on October 04, 2021.

The defendants including several Moulavies are accused of the series of suicide bombings on 21 April 2019 targeting Catholic churches and five-star hotels that killed more than 270 people and seriously injured more than 300 others.

The three-judge bench of the High Court hearing the case filed by the Attorney General, issued summons directing the accused to appear before the court to file indictments against them.

Following a request made by the Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, the Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya on September 01 appointed the special three-member panel of judges comprising Justice Damith Thotawatte as chair and Justices Amal Ranaraja and Navaratne Marasinghe as members to hear the case.

The police had filed 23,270 charges against the 25 defendants in connection with the 2019 Easter Sunday suicide attacks which caused a great stir in the society.

The charges filed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act include conspiring to murder, aiding and abetting, collecting arms and ammunition, and attempted murder.
