‘Sri Lanka’s health service is one of the best in the world’ – Minister of Health

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella says that Sri Lanka’s healthcare system is one of the best in the world and that Sri Lanka has achieved the leading indicators in South Asia.

The Minister pointed out that it is a matter of pride that 95% of the hospitalized procedures in the country and 99% of the preventive services are carried out by the government health system.

He made these remarks at the Good Intern Programme 2021 for newly recruited interns held today (02) on zoom at the Government Medical Officers’ Association Conference Hall.

Good Intern Programme is a skills training program for pre interns who are awaiting internship and this is conducted by Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

The program is designed to uplift the clinical skills of Pre-Intern Doctors and expected to improve the quality of doctors.

As a first step, Sinhala, Tamil and English language training will be provided for two weeks. Since the inception of the program in 2013, 4400 doctors have been given second language training. It also offers a practical clinical training course that is essential for patient care. In all these training programs, the quality of interns, quality of public communication, etc. are also mastered.

This year’s course will show how doctors should deal with Covid, especially targeting this global epidemic, through World Health Organization criteria.

The program was organized by the Government Medical Officers’ Association led by Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the Sri Lanka Office of the World Health Organization.

The Health Minister also stated that Sri Lankan health workers, especially our doctors, are highly regarded internationally.

According to the 2018 World Bank report, the maternal mortality rate is 33.8 per 100,000 live births, the infant mortality rate is 9 per 1,000 live births and the life expectancy at birth is 75 years, the Minister added.
