Speaker to chair a special party leaders’ meeting today as Opposition MPs continue to boycott parliament

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A special meeting of party leaders is scheduled to be held today (06) at 8.30 am under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

It is reported that this emergency meeting of the party leaders has been scheduled to discuss the recent incidents in Parliament and also to focus on future parliamentary proceedings. All party leaders have been informed to participate in the discussion.

Meanwhile, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena announced today (06) that a committee consisting of senior members from the Government and Opposition will be appointed within the week to look into the incidents that took place in Parliament last Friday and Saturday and submit a report.

Meanwhile, members of the main opposition party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya have decided to boycott Parliament today as well, alleging that opposition members are being intimidated by ruling party members, SJB Kurunegala District MP Ashoka Abeysinghe said.

He further stated that the members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will also stage a protest in front of the Parliament building this morning.

It has been decided to hand over a letter signed by the members of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to the Speaker today in protest.

MPs of Samagi Jana Balawegaya walked out from the Parliament on Saturday (04) in protest of continuing intimidation of opposition members.
