Sri Lanka fishermen warned of rough seas as another depression approaches

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department says the low pressure area in the South-east Bay of Bengal located 1100 km from the eastern coast of the island could develop into a depression within the next 24 hours.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee, the forecast says.

The deep sea area off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee can be temporary very rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to 60-70 kmph.

Temporarily strong gusty winds (up to 70-80 kmph) and very rough seas can be expected in the sea areas during thundershowers.

Therefore, the Department warns fishermen to refrain from engaging in fishing activities in deep and shallow waters from today.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Northern, North-Central, Eastern and Uva provinces and fairly heavy showers (about 75mm) can be expected in these areas.

Showers or thundershowers will occur elsewhere after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong gusty winds (up to 50kmph) can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

There may be temporary localized strong winds during thundershowers.
