PM says probe underway on corrupt practices in 2008

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says investigations have been launched into corrupt practices said to have taken place in 2008.

The Prime Minister told Parliament today that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa must come forward and make a statement over the allegations of fraud committed when he was President in 2008.

The Presidential commission which investigated the treasury bond scam of 2015, had recommended that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka should first conduct a forensic audit with regard to the alleged fraud and corrupt practices from 2008 and based on such findings legal steps should be taken.

The commission had found that funds of the Employment Provident Fund (EPF) were lost mostly during that period.

Wickremesinghe told Parliament today that steps will be taken to ensure legal action is taken against those accused.

He also said that legal action will be taken against those accused in the 2015 treasury bond scam and the money lost to the Government will be recovered.
