Prices of several costly drugs to be reduced next month

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says that steps will be taken to reduce the prices of several very expensive drugs in July.

The Minister said steps were taken to reduce the prices of 48 essential drugs at the first stage and now the decision has been made to reduce the prices of expensive drugs under the second stage.

The Minister of Health said after reducing the prices of medicine, he has decided to revise the charges at private hospitals.

The Minister of Health pointed out that due to the exemption of health services from VAT a number of problems were resolved and therefore, he decided to regulate the prices for services at private hospitals.

The Minister also said that steps will be taken to eliminate the drug mafia. He said that he was able to stop the cancer drugs mafia and noted that the cancer drug injection imported from Russia has not shown any complications in patients.

The Minister recalled that when the vaccine was introduced, the media raised a huge opposition. However, the Minister emphasized that this injection was imported to Sri Lanka on the approval of the National Drugs Regulatory Authority.
