Speaker to decide on post of opposition leader this week

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka’s Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told Parliament today that the decision regarding who should be the opposition leader will be given this week.

A tense situation arose in parliament when the issue of the post of opposition leader was discussed in Parliament today.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Parliamentarian Bimal Ratnayake, pointed out that since UPFA is a party of the unity government carrying out the administration of the country, if the party wants to claim the opposition leader’s post, they should discontinue with the National Government.

Minister Harin Fernando said, the question about the Opposition Leader is not an issue concerning the government.

Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama argued that there is no such political party called the ‘joint opposition’.

At the end of the discussion, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya told parliament that the final decision on this will be given later this week since two other legal issues regarding the appointment of the opposition leader from the joint opposition need to be inquired.
