Government to take steps to increase police spy services

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Minister of State Administration, Law and Order Ranjith Madduma Bandara says that steps will be taken to increase police spy services and the Inspector general of Police has been given the necessary instructions.

The Minister said the purpose of increasing police spying is to obtain information about crimes committed by various criminal groups and other organizations. The police spy services are constantly in contact with the public while maintaining a high level of service as other intelligence services.

Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara disclosed this information in response to the queries regarding the criticism leveled against the police by various groups in the country.

The Minister commenting on the Aava gang in the North said it is a group formed by youth under the age of 25 years and not a strong enough criminal group to be controlled by the country’s army.

He further said that a good program is being implemented to maintain law and order in the country at present and the results are already visible.

Pointing out that most of the shootings and killings in the recent past are the activities of underworld gangs, the Minister said according to police reports, compared to the past, the crime rate is down at present.

In addition to raising police spying, instructions have been given to increase the number of operations by the Special Task Force police to apprehend the criminals, the Minister said.
