Speaker dismisses reports of resigning if October 26 coup repeated

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The reports appeared in media today that the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has declared that he would resign if an illegal incident such as the October 26 coup took place again are completely false, the Speaker’s Media Unit announced today (26).

Several newspapers and social media posts had stated that Speaker would resign from his post if an anti-democratic and illegal incident such as the swearing-in of a new Prime Minister without the parliamentary majority on 26th October 2018.

The Speaker’s Office said the reports which are not based on a proper source are completely false.

“The Speaker does not ever hold such an opinion and no such statement has been made,” the Speaker’s Media Unit affirmed.

“The Speaker is firmly in the position that the Parliament should not hesitate to take the maximum measures against any action that is contrary to Parliamentary democracy,” the statement said.

The above article, however, appears to be merely a speculation from the respective media outlets that published the news; therefore, , the Speaker does not believe that such a situation will arise again, the release concluded.
