Police instructed to remove flags and stickers displaying slogans, photos promoting presidential candidates on vehicles

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Election Commission has instructed the police to remove stickers and flags since displaying slogans and photographs of the candidates promoting them is in violation of Election law.

The directive was issued following the complaints received by the Election Commission that stickers and flags and stickers supporting presidential candidates are being displayed on three-wheelers, buses and other private vehicles.

Elections commission chairman Mahinda Deshapriya says that such acts of promoting candidates are an offense under section 74 of the Presidential Election Act No 15 of 1981.

Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya has instructed DIGs, Divisional Police Officers and OICs to carry out urgent inspections covering all police areas to remove the stickers and flags displayed on all private vehicles, including private buses and three-wheelers.
