Postal voting for the 2019 presidential election begins, special security plan in effect

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Marking of postal ballots for the 2019 presidential election will take place today at a number of state institutions.

A total of 655,915 state employees and members of tri forces and police are eligible to cast their postal vote for the election.

Public sector employees will be able to cast their vote today’s and tomorrow (01) from 8.30 am to 4.15 pm at their official work place.

Police officers will vote on November 4 and 5. Those who fail to cast their postal votes on both given dates, can alternatively cast their postal votes on November 7.

Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Election (PAFFREL) says more than 1,000 election observers have been deployed to monitor the postal voting.

Meanwhile, the Police Headquarters states that a special security program will be implemented today and tomorrow for the postal voting.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara stated that all police stations have been instructed on the arrangement by the police headquarters.
