Swiss Embassy employee remanded until Dec 30

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The Colombo Chief magistrate’s Court today remanded the Swiss Embassy employee Garnier Banister Francis, who was arrested for allegedly making false claims today till December 30.

The Swiss embassy staffer was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) this afternoon following the instructions of the Attorney General to the IGP to arrest Ms Francis for providing false information and attempting to create unrest in the country.

The Swiss Embassy employee has claimed that on November 25th she was abducted by an unidentified group near the St. Bridget’s Convent in Colombo and assaulted her threatening to disclose “embassy-related information”.

Ms. Francis was presented to a panel of psychiatrists this morning on the orders of Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne.

She was summoned to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) earlier today for the fifth time for questioning. After interrogation, the CID took Ms. Francis to the National Mental Health Institute in Angoda for a psychiatric evaluation.

The woman was also taken to the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer for a forensic examination to ascertain whether she has been assaulted or sexually abused.

The Criminal Investigations Department last week informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne that from the investigations conducted so far, no evidence has been found to suggest the Swiss Embassy employee Garnier Banister Francis was abducted.
