(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (Dec 30) granted bail to Parliamentarian Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, who was remanded until today in connection with the ‘white van’ media conference on November 10 ahead of the presidential elections.

MP Senaratne was released on two personal sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. He was banned from traveling overseas and ordered to hand over his passport to the courts.

Furthermore, Rajitha Senaratne has been ordered to make a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) upon his discharge from the hospital.

MP Senaratne was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department on Friday December 27 in connection with the controversial ‘white van’ news conference while receiving treatment at a private hospital in Narahenpita.

The prison authorities yesterday decided to let the former minister stay at the prison hospital while under remand custody after his doctors refused to discharge him on the grounds of his health condition.

The two individuals who participated in the media briefing with the former minister were also arrested and remanded until January 6th, 2020.

One of the suspects claimed that he was a ‘white van’ driver involved in abducting people before 2015 while the other claimed he once served as a driver to transport a stock of gold from LTTE-held areas.
