Sri Lanka to hold General Election on August 05

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka’s Election Commission today announced that the parliamentary general election 2020 will be held on 05 August 2020.

The Election Commission comprising Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, Ratnajeevan H. Hoole and N. J. Abeyesekere has made the decision on the new date following several rounds of discussions with the health and security authorities and other stakeholders and a polling rehearsal.

Addressing media Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said the members of the Elections Commission had unanimously decided that the general election scheduled for June 20 could be held on August 5, 2020.

The relevant gazette notification has been issued amending the previous gazette notifications on the election date.

“It is hereby notified that the Election for electing the members of Parliament for the aforesaid Electoral Districts will be held on 05th August, 2020,” the new extraordinary gazette notification said.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa dissolved Parliament on March 02 and the General election was scheduled on April 25. As the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, the Election Commission postponed the election date to June 20.
