Fixed prices for 10 essential foods from February

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardena says that steps will be taken to maintain a fixed price for 10 essential food items from February.

He was speaking at a discussion held today regarding the commencement of operations at the Mihintale Main Economic Center.

The program will be implemented for rice, flour, sugar, lentils, canned fish, sprats, salt, potatoes, eggs and chicken. The Ministry of Trade plans to purchase high quality goods at low prices.

Steps will be taken to supply the products obtained at the lowest supply prices directly to the customers through the Sathosa and Co-operative outlets as well as the Q-shop network. The purpose of this program is to stabilize the prices of essential food items.

This will be implemented for a period of 6 months from February as an initial step. The Minister also said that a newspaper advertisement calling for supply bids from local manufacturers and direct importers is ready to be published this month.
