Sri Lanka’s first death of a doctor due to Covid reported

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Dr. Gayan Dantanarayana, who was receiving special treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital due to COVID-19 infection, has died this morning (02), Karapitiya Hospital sources said.

This is the first time a doctor has died of COVID-19 infection in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Dantanarayana, 31, was working at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama when he contracted COVID-19 and fell ill.

He had been initially admitted to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases for treatment, but later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital after he suffered complications due to Covid pneumonia and diabetes.

Karapitiya Teaching Hospital is the only hospital that has the essential equipment to treat the patient.

Several members of the deceased doctor’s family are also reportedly being treated for COVID-19.

Educated at the Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, Dr. Dantanarayana graduated from the Tianjin Medical College in China with a medical degree and served at the Colombo North Teaching Hospital in Ragama until contracting COVID-19. He is a resident of Gampaha.
