Police officer inspecting vehicles killed in a road accident in Rajagiriya

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –A 52-year-old Sub Inspector of Police attached to the Police Emergency Response Unit and another person were killed in a road accident near the Ayurveda Roundabout on the Bandaranayakepura Road in the early hours of Tuesday.

The accident took place at around 4.30 this morning, the police said.

Police officers from the Colombo Emergency Response Unit have been inspecting vehicles traveling on the road between the Rajagiriya flyover and the Ayurvedic roundabout.

While they were inspecting a small lorry traveling on the road, a van speeding from Battaramulla direction had run over the police officers who were inspecting the vehicles.

The sub-inspector who was inspecting the lorry and the driver’s assistant of the small lorry were killed in the accident.

The driver of the speeding vehicle, a resident of Thalawathugoda, has been arrested and Welikada Police are conducting further investigations.
