Myanmar releases 12 Sri Lankan fishermen from custody

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The 12 Sri Lankan fishermen detained by Myanmar for illegally entering its waters have been released from custody, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Myanmar said.

The fishermen had left the Trincomalee fishing harbor for fishing in January 2021 and they were arrested by the Myanmar Navy in February for violating maritime boundaries. The fishermen were subsequently remanded by a Myanmar court.

The Embassy stated that the released fishermen are set to be repatriated to Sri Lanka.
