(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and the leader of the United National Party (UNP) was sworn in as a new Member of Parliament before the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this morning.
Mr. Wickremesinghe had been requested by a number of parties to be nominated for the National List seat to fill the gap left by the absence of a strong opposition in Parliament.
He has been a Member of Parliament from 1977 to 2019 and has served as Prime Minister five times. He is an experienced politician who has held a number of powerful ministerial posts.
