Testing to identify more virulent coronavirus variants resume from today

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Another round of testing will begin today (28) to find out whether the Indian Covid-19 Delta variant has spread to other parts of the country, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara, Director of Operations and Clinical Services at Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit, University of Sri Jayewardenepura said.

The Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura will resume genome sequence testing of coronavirus samples obtained from various parts of the island, from today.

The Allergy Immunology and Cell Biology Unit has received nearly 100 samples of coronavirus infected people from different parts of the country for these tests, Dr. Jeewandara said, This is the first time in Sri Lanka that such a large number of samples have been subjected to genetic analysis, he said.

Dr. Jeewandara said samples have been provided by the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health. The tests on these samples are expected to be completed within a week and the results will be released, he said.
