Sri Lanka’s largest fishing harbor to open to the public in November

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The Ministry of Fisheries says the Wennappuwa Wellamankara fishing harbor, which is being constructed as the largest fishing harbor in Sri Lanka, is expected to be opened to the public next month.

The construction of this harbor, which is the largest project in the Sri Lankan fisheries sector, will cost nearly Rs. 2.5 billion.

Larger than the Dikowita fishing harbor, which is currently considered to be the largest fishing harbor in Sri Lanka, Wennappuwa fishing harbor can accommodate up to 800 large fishing boats as well as multi-day fishing vessels at a time.

The fishing harbor with a large breakwater comprises all the facilities of and fishing harbor, as well as harbor managers and staff hostels, restaurants, and a Coast Guard unit.

With the opening of the Wennappuwa Wellamankara Fisheries Harbor, opening of a new shopping complex in the area will open up incomes to the people of the area and as this fishing harbor is a beautiful fishing harbor, it is planned to develop this area as a tourist city in the future.

The construction of this harbor is being carried out under the direct supervision of the Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda.
