Sri Lanka mulls obtaining the experimental antiviral drug for COVID-19

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Prof. Channa Jayasumana, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals, said the experimental antiviral drug molnupiravir used in many parts of the world for the treatment of COVID-19, is being considered for use in Sri Lanka.

He also stated that a request has been made to the Director General of Health Services to make the necessary recommendations.

Prof. Jayasumana said that a number of countries around the world have been paying attention to the use of this drug manufactured by the pharmaceutical giant Merck and that the Director General of Health Services has been informed to seek the views of the expert committee on the feasibility of using this drug.

He said a request has been made to inform on the quantities of the drugs and the dates, if the drugs were to be brought to the country.
