Newly constructed Magistrate Court buildings vested with the public

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Minister of Justice Ali Sabry yesterday (26) declared open to the public the newly constructed Medawachchiya District / Magistrate’s Court and Kahatagasdigiliya District / Magistrate’s Court in line with the Vision of Prosperity Policy Statement.

SM Chandrasena, Minister of Lands, State Minister Shehan Semasinghe, MPs KH Nandasena and Uddika Premaratne and other distinguished guests participated in the event yesterday.

The Medawachchiya District / Magistrate Court Building has been completed at a cost of Rs. 157 million while the Kahatagasdigiliya Court Building has been completed at a cost of Rs. 102 million. These two courts have so far functioned as the Circuit Magistrate’s Courts and will be functioning as permanent courts from today.

While the Anuradhapura Judicial Zone has a population of about one million, there are 9084 civil cases and 44733 criminal cases.

There are 3588 cases in the Medawachchiya Circuit Court and 4001 cases in the Kahatagasdigiliya Circuit Court. Making these travel courts into permanent courts will enable to expedite the proceedings of the pending cases.

With the construction of court complexes as another phase of the present government’s program to reduce the backlog of cases and expedite proceedings while identifying the shortcomings to provide solutions, the government aims to end the backlog of cases in courts island wide without delay.
