Sri Lanka Speaker recovers from COVID and leaves hospital

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka’s Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, who was treated at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Colombo for Covid infection, has recovered and left hospital yesterday (31), local reports said.

The Speaker was admitted to the IDH after contracting COVID-19 and received in-patient treatment for several days.

The Speaker has left the hospital for his private residence in Dehiwala as several Covid infected employees are being quarantined at the Speaker’s official residence.

The Speaker’s quarantine period is due to end on the 7th. According to parliamentary sources, he will be able to attend the parliamentary session to be held on the 8th.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the manager of the Speaker’s official residence Pasan Athukorala and six members of the staff have also been infected with Covid. They also have been placed under quarantine at the Speaker’s official residence.

Ten other employees, including the Speaker’s bodyguards, have been quarantined for associating with Covid patients.
