‘Work from Home’ for public servants mooted

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Commissioner General of Essential Services K.D.S. Ruwanchandra has advised the Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry to limit the number of public servants called to office, and encourage ‘Work from Home’.

In a letter dated May 13, the Commissioner General has asked the Ministry to summon only the essential staff to work in a bid to reduce Government expenditure considering the prevailing crisis situation in the country, where fuel, electricity and LP Gas supply has been limited.

The letter said that the above decision was taken during a meeting with Chief Secretaries of Provincial Councils, District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries held on May 12 to discuss the continuation of essential services.

The Commissioner General said the Head of Institution is empowered to decide the essential staff members who should be called to work.

The Head of Institution is also given powers to permit the workers, who have to travel a long distance to work, to report to an office near to his or her place of residence as a temporary measure. Those working in large office spaces are requested only to use a small office area in a bid to save electricity, fuel and water.
