Sri Lanka President has resigned – sources

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country early Wednesday, without handing over his resignation letter to the Speaker as agreed, has sent the letter of resignation from his position to the Speaker a few moments ago, sources at parliament said.

The sources also mentioned that Mr. Rajapaksa sent his resignation letter to the Speaker after his arrival in Singapore from Maldives.

Maldives Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed on Twitter confirmed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned.

“I hope Sri Lanka can now move forward. I believe the President would not have resigned if he were still in Sri Lanka, and fearful of losing his life. I commend the thoughtful actions of the Government of Maldives. My best wishes to the people of Sri Lanka,” Nasheed tweeted.
