Program to award scholarships from the President’s Fund to GCE (A/L) students of low-income families commences

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) –The President’s Fund has started a scholarship program for students with financial difficulties who have passed the G.E.C. (Ordinary Level) examination taken for the first time in 2021 (2022) and will take the G.E.C. (Advanced Level) examination in 2024.

The President’s Media Division said the program has been initiated on the directives of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

As per the instructions of President Ranil Wickramasinghe, President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake has sent a letter dated 30-11-2022 to the Secretary of the Ministry of Education to start inviting applications from eligible students.

Accordingly, to qualify for the scholarship, the monthly income of the applicant’s family should not exceed Rs. 75,000/- and the applicant should be a student studying in a government school or a fee-free private school.

The applicant should have taken GCE O/L examination held in the year 2021 (2022) for the first time and be fully qualified to study GCE A/L in the year 2024.

It has been decided to select 30 qualified scholarship winners from each of the 99 education zonal offices of the island.

The selected scholarship winners are expected to be offered a bursary of Rs.5,000 per month for a maximum period of 24 months until they appear for the G.C.E A/L) examination.

The related applications have already been forwarded to the principals by the Ministry of Education.

Scholarship candidates should get the relevant applications from the Principal and submit them to the Principal before 23-12-2022 with the relevant recommendation of the Grama Niladhari regarding the income status.

Those applications should be forwarded by the principals to the Zonal Director of Education.

The applications given by the Principals to the Zonal Education Offices shall be selected by a committee chaired by the Zonal Education Director.

After selecting the top 30 candidates, a copy of the applicant’s national identity card and a copy of the bank account and other related details should be completed and the Zonal Education Director should submit the selected applications to the Ministry of Education through the Provincial Education Director before 2023-02-03. Applications received late will be rejected.

The relevant newspaper advertisement has been published by the President’s Fund on 05 December 2022 in the national newspapers “Dinamina” and “Thinakaran” and the relevant application and instruction sheet can also be obtained by visiting the website of the President’s Fund at www.presidentsfund.gov.lk.
