Cabinet postpones considering proposal to hike electricity tariff

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera has submitted the Cabinet Paper on the proposed revision of electricity tariffs to the Cabinet of Ministers at today’s meeting.

Minister Wijesekera in a Twitter post said proposed electricity tariff revision was discussed at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday.

The Cabinet has reportedly postponed considering and reaching a decision on the cabinet paper to next week’s meeting.

The Minister said he briefed the ministers on the requirements, proposed tariff structure, energy forecast and finances.

He said one week was extended for the cabinet of ministers for their observations on the proposals.

Meanwhile, the trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board held discussions yesterday(2) on the measures that will be taken in the event the government reaches a decision to increase electricity tariffs.

Convener of the Ceylon Electricity Board Joint Trade Union Alliance Ranjan Jayalal said if the cabinet decides to increase the tariffs, stern union action will be launched indefinitely from tomorrow.

The union leader said the public already burdened by the cost of living, will be unable to bear the increase in electricity tariffs.
