Cabinet approves electricity tariff hike, no decision on a date

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – The Cabinet of Ministers has decided to increase the electricity tariff once again but no decision has been taken on the date on the implementation of the rate hike.

The Cabinet at its meeting today has approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera to implement a cost-reflective electricity tariff formula to increase tariffs.

Minister of Power and Energy presented a cabinet paper to the last cabinet meeting on 02 January seeking approval to increase the electricity bill once again, and among other things, it was suggested to prepare a price formula with cost adjustment for electricity charges.

After discussing the relevant approval the cabinet at its meeting today has been given the approval. However, future measures are expected to be determined after submitting the approved cabinet proposal to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka and receiving its approval.
