South Korea increases annual job quota for Sri Lankans to 6500

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – South Korea has increased annual job quota for Sri Lankans to 6,500 this year, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said Monday.

According to the Minister, Sri Lanka has received 6500 opportunities for employment in Korea in 2023, while last year only 5,047 opportunities were received.

Accordingly, the number of job opportunities has increased by 28.79% compared to last year and 1,453 new job opportunities have been received for this year compared to last year.

This is the highest quota Sri Lanka has received since the job program with South Korea started.

For these 6,500 job opportunities, 14,588 applicants have been given the opportunity to wait on the waiting list, namely 12,189 in the manufacturing sector, 2,149 in the fishing sector and 250 in the construction sector.

Although the job quota was 5,047 opportunities last year, 6,639 workers were able to be dispatched as a result of continuous requests made by the Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Mr. Manusha Nanayakkara from the Korean Human Resources Department

The Minister expressed confidence that this year also it will be possible to send more workers than the job quota received for the year.

The minister said that over 300,000 Sri Lankans left for foreign jobs in 2022 and Sri Lankans need more foreign job opportunities as Workers’ remittance is one of the main sources of foreign revenues for Sri Lanka.
