The new Electricity Bill to be submitted to cabinet for approval

(LANKAPUVATH | COLOMBO) – A special meeting was held today with the development agencies to discuss the progress and the next steps in the restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera said that the new Electricity Bill has been submitted to the legal draftsman’s office for clearance and it will be submitted to the Cabinet of ministers’ approval once the certification of the Attorney General is received.

A power sector reform secretariat that will be established will develop and implement the transition plan with the financial and technical assistance of the development agencies, he added.

Country directors, mission heads, senior officials, and energy experts of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the World Bank, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Sri Lanka, participated in the discussion.

The Minister expressed his appreciation to the development agencies for their assistance extended to the reform process.
