(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Thilanga Sumathipala revealed that Sri Lanka Cricket’s present administration has been able to earn a record Rs. 400 million income within a year.
Mr. Sumathipala said that it is a great achievement by his new administration to reach this milestone in its first year in office, despite huge challenges they had to overcome.
The SLC President stated this after handing over SLC’s last year’s un-audited financial reports to Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara at the Sports Ministry Auditorium on Wednesday (08).
The financial reports have been submitted to the Auditor General and along with his report they will submit it at the SLC Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will be held in May.
Mr. Sumathipala pointed out that the previous Interim Committee left with a Rs. 320 million loss and it is due to the great teamwork of new administration that SLC had managed to save Rs. 200 million at the end of 2016.
“We have presented the financial reports after our internal audit. Financial administration is top most and any institution that does not handle it seriously will collapse. We never thought that SLC would be in such a pathetic financial state when we took over. However we did not waste time and blame others. We reduced our expenses and apprised the Sports Minister of our progress every 3-months. A Financial Advisory Committee has been set up with Nuski Mohamed, (A former Treasurer of SLC) as the Head,” said Mr. Sumathipala.
“We invested on top priority projects, especially those within the legal frame work. Improper projects that had not been approved by the Pradesheeya Sabha and Municipal Councils have been stopped,” he further said.
Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara said that he is happy about SLC’s progress. “SLC was in a very tragic financial state, running to nearly Rs. 400 million loss and it is great that Mr. Sumathipala and his team turned things right,” said the Minister.
“I have never interfered with selections, and SLC’s day-to-day activities. I always inquire through my Secretary if a problem surfaces. We have to develop cricket further. We can’t win every day and also lose every day. Recently out team performed well and SLC is also making progress, so the future of cricket will be much better,” the Minister said.
