31,000 expatriate Sri Lankans get dual citizenship in the last two years

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –A large number of Sri Lankans who had obtained citizenship in other countries are applying for the dual citizenship in Sri Lanka, the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, Nihal Ranasinghe says.

Since 2015 March, 31,000 have been granted dual citizenship, the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, said.

Each applicant for dual citizenship is required to pay Rs. 300,000 and Rs 50,000 each for the spouse and children.

The Controller General said the Immigration and Emigration Department is receiving a large number of applications for dual citizenship and the Department is taking measures to expedite reviewing the applications and grant the dual citizenship to eligible applicants.
