(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The anti-riot squad of Sri Lanka Special Task Force police has rescued the Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board who was taken hostage by the CEB workers belonging to the Ceylon Electricity Board Employees Union yesterday.
A group of clerical and allied services staff at CEB headquarters demanding solutions for their issues has forcibly detained the CEB Chairman D.W. Ganegala in his office yesterday for over eight hours.
The group has also rejected the order given by the Fort Magistrate’s Court to release the Chairman and the anti-riot squad was deployed to rescue the official.
However the CEB union today launched an island wide strike today protesting the police action. The union says five workers were injured when the police assaulted them. The injured workers have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
