(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Deputy General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that the no-confidence motion (NCM) against the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will definitely be defeated.
Addressing a media briefing held in UNP headquarters at Sirikotha on Monday (April 02), the Minister said a group plotted against the mandate of the people in 2015 has taken the lead to bring the NCM against the Prime Minister.
“They are tactically seeking ways to defeat the government and take power into their hands and destabilize the country. They have no feelings about the livelihoods of the people or the economy of the country. They only have the pretense of gaining power,” he said.
“We will not allow to reverse the mandate we obtained in 2015. We will unite all the forces and defeat this no-confidence motion,” the Minister stressed.
“Afterwards, we will launch the battle to win the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections,” Minister Kariyawasam said pointing out that the opposition has no ability to win more than 50 percent of votes at the 2020 elections if they couldn’t win over 45 percent at the local government elections.
The Minister noted that the Joint Opposition’s NCM against the Premier centers on the Central Bank bond scam but Bond Commission report also notes the scams took place since 2008.
“Now the same group accused of those scams more than once is bringing a NCM against the Premier. That’s the ridiculousness of this motion,” he said.
