Cabinet takes measures to resolve railway workers’ problems

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – The cabinet of ministers has decided to take measures to resolve the problems faced by railway employees and fulfill their demands, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Ashoka Abeysinghe said.

The Deputy Minister said the salary increase demanded by the railway employees has been discussed in the cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

A cabinet subcommittee has been appointed under the chairmanship of Minister Sarath Amunugama to resolve the salary anomalies and the decisions taken by the committee have been informed to the Cabinet. Despite the measure the railway workers have decided to launch a strike.

Accordingly the strike launched by railway unions demanding the government to rectify salary anomalies was called off in less than an hour after it was launched yesterday.

The Deputy Minister said the Cabinet has decided to make the Railways a closed service and thereby allowing the government to increase the salaries.

Minister of Agriculture, Mahinda Amaraweera, addressing the media said the cabinet discussed the railway employees’ problem and took necessary measures to resolve the issue.
