Tablets for GCE A /L students to be given as a pilot project

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –The government’s attention has been paid to the program to provide tablets for students entering Advanced Level classes in the government schools as a pilot project due to the cost.

At the cabinet meeting held Tuesday the program to procure 200,000 tablets for distribution among the GCE A/L students was discussed at length and taking into consideration the facts presented it was agreed that the program should be implemented as a pilot project.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has also expressed his views on the importance of this project.

However, speaking at the cabinet meeting, President Maithripala Sirisena has said that the tablets given to students at the cost of Rs. 5 billion will not be returned and therefore the government has to spend Rs. 5 billion annually.

The President has said that spending Rs. 5 billion annually is not feasible and importance of providing computer tablets to all GCE A/L students need to be reassessed.
