(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Sri Lanka’s Meteorology Department today warned the Naval and fishing communities of the rough sea conditions although the depression over the southeast Arabian Sea area is moving away from the country.
The Meteorology Department warned the naval and fishing communities to be vigilant since the possibility of the roughness in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Matara is still high with the increase of wind speed up to 70-80 kmph particularly during the thunder showers.
The Meteorology Department said the depression over the southeast Arabian Sea is located 1650 km away from Colombo near latitude 11.9°N and longitude 65.8°E and the possibility for very heavy showers/thundershowers and very rough seas, very high winds can be expected in the sea areas within 100km to 200 km of its location.
The depression in the Arabian Sea is very likely to intensify further in to Deep Depression during next 12 hours and into a Cyclonic Storm during subsequent 24 hour. It is likely to move northwestwards away from Sri Lanka, Meteorology Department said.
The Department requested the fishermen on multiday boats fishing in the Arabian Sea areas to refrain from naval and fishing activities in this areas. The warning is in effect until 10 pm Monday, 8th October.
Meanwhile, prevailing showery condition is expected to enhance over the island during tomorrow (9th October). Showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the island particularly after 2.00p.m.
Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in Northern, Western and Eastern provinces and in Galle, Matara and Kalutara districts in the morning too.
Heavy falls about 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Eastern, Southern, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Western provinces.
