(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Japanese broadcaster NHK has launched the first super-high definition TV channel, offering 16 times the resolution of HD TV.
The channel, launched on Saturday, offers 30,000,000 pixels, 16 times that of HD TV, with some broadcasts including 24 channels of audio.
NHK’s new channel currently broadcasts for about 12 hours a day in Japan.
The company say they have been working on 8K technology, which NHK call ‘Super Hi-Vision’, since 1995.
To receive the new channel, viewers will need an 8K display and 8K-compatible satellite receiver.
Samsung and LG both launched 8K displays at IFA 2018 in Germany earlier this year.
Because a strong 8K consumer-market has not yet developed, NHK plans to showcase the equipment in venues around Japan and hopes to broadcast the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games in the new format.
