(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake have arrested a Sri Lankan passenger who was attempting to smuggle in gold jewellery worth over Rs 7 million.
According to the Customs officials, the suspect was arrested on suspicion upon arrival from Singapore yesterday. He was arrested at the departure lounge when he attempted to leave through the Green Channel.
Upon inspection, officials have found gold jewelry weighing 1.150 kg in his possession. The jewellery stock which included 9 unfinished necklaces were concealed in his luggage and is estimated to worth over Rs 7 million.
The 60-year-old suspect is a resident of Wellampitiya.
Following an investigation by the Airport Customs officials the gold stock was confiscated while the suspect was fined Rs. 500,000 and released.
