Sri Lanka releases nine Indian trawlers from custody

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) – Sri Lanka Navy with the assistance of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard on Sunday handed over nine Indian fishing trawlers held under its custody, back to India on completion of repair work.

The Indian fishing trawlers had been seized by Sri Lanka Navy for trespassing into Sri Lankan territorial waters for poaching.

The trawlers moored at the jetty of SLNS Uttara in Kankasanthurai were repaired by a dedicated team of Indian engineers who arrived in Sri Lanka on 17th January.

A Sri Lanka Coast Guard craft escorted the repaired trawlers to the International maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) north of Kankasanthurai and handed them over to the Indian Coast Guard Ship Ameya Sunday evening.
