(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said today that he would resign from his post if the elections for the Provincial Councils were not held before November 10.
Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today, he said.
Mahinda Deshapriya said that the provincial council election can not be held due to the prevailing legal situation. The Provincial Councils Bill should be amended and passed in Parliament to conduct the election. Mahinda Deshapriya pointed out that the Supreme Court can submit a petition to the Fundamental Rights violation on the condition that any citizen of the country does not have the provincial council election on the present situation.
He told a news conference that he would take this decision in protest of the delaying of PC polls for two years.
