Sri Lanka Cricket new president Shammi Silva assumes duties

(COLOMBO, LANKAPUVATH) –Shammi Silva, who was elected today as new president of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), assumed duties in his post yesterday afternoon.

Silva, who is said to be representing the former president Thilanga Sumathipala’s faction, obtaining 83 votes at the SLC election held today defeated Jayantha Dharmadasa by 27 votes.

Shammi Silva was a member of the Executive Committee headed by Thilanga Sumathipala.

In the past few months, due to the postponement of elections, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board was administered by a competent authority appointed by the Sports Ministry.

Meanwhile, Raveen Wickramaratne with 82 votes and Mathivanan Kangadaran with 80 votes have been elected as vice presidents. Former World Cup winning captain and Minister Arjuna Rantunga narrowly lost receiving only 72 votes.

Mohan Silva has been elected to the post of Secretary with 96 votes. Arjuna Rantunga’s younger brother, Nishantha Ranatunga who contested from the other faction received 45 votes.

Lasantha Wickramasinghe has been elected as the Treasurer with 100 votes and Krishantha Kapuwatte as the Assistant Secretary.
